MORE THAN WARMTH

Growing up Mennonite, I was always surrounded with the image of quilts. As I transitioned into adulthood, moving away from home, starting college, becoming a designer, I was left reflecting the childhood that I soon realized was a little different than many of my peers. This image and symbol of quilts has always stuck with me. The stories that they tell, the people behind the creation of them, the representation of peace and love they bring.

This book displays various pictures that I collected of quilts people around me have created. My goal was for the colors and graphics to come directly from the quilting imagery, so I used portions of fabric scraps, smaller sections of the larger quilts, to represent the process of creating a quilt, stitching each piece together one by one. The typefaces I chose to use throughout were thoughtfully chosen to represent the traditional beauty but also the power quilts symbolize, using a mix of a simple and bold sans serif. Through designing this book, I was aiming to share how powerful traditional craft making can be to many cultures and communities and how vital it is to continue these traditions.
